Mark Tanner was born in Provo, Utah and grew up in Hacienda Heights, California, the oldest of five brothers. He attended San Jose State University on a basketball scholarship and graduated with Great Distinction, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Spanish. He attended Pepperdine School of Law in Malibu graduating in 1982, and he was also admitted to the State Bar of California that year. Mr. Tanner has been practicing workers' compensation law since 1983, first in San Jose and more recently in San Diego.
An avid beach volleyball player, maintaining an AAA beach rating through the age of 50, he now coaches an elite girls' club volleyball team, Carlsbad Surf. His hobbies include volleyball, surf kayaking, gardening, tile mosaics, and being with his family—not necessarily in that order. He has been married for 30 years and has four children and two granddaughters.
