Born and raised in San Francisco, Brian C. Gordenev attended the University of San Francisco where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in History and, as well, his law degree. His career has taken many turns. When first starting out as a lawyer, he worked for a firm that had him doing civil litigation, workers’ compensation, family law and criminal law. Aside from many civil trials, he also had a number of criminal trials culminating in the successful defense of a first-degree murder charge. Realizing that criminal law was not his favorite pastime, Mr. Gordenev focused on Workers’ Compensation and Civil Litigation. In 1984 he joined the staff counsel office for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company in San Francisco heading up the workers’ compensation group. He was then named the Managing Attorney of their new office in San Jose where he was the lead civil trial attorney in addition to his workers’ compensation work. Since that time, Mr. Gordenev has focused his practice in the Workers’ Compensation arena. He and his wife, Susan Mertens, had their own practice for 12 years in the defense of workers’ compensation cases for carriers, employers, municipalities, TPA’s and self-insured employers. Mr. Gordenev has acted as a Judge Pro Tem at the San Jose WCAB and has been appointed arbitrator and Pro Tem Judge for the Santa Clara Superior Court. At Bradford & Barthel, Mr. Gordenev continues to focus on the defense of Workers’ Compensation matters and always enjoys a good doctor’s deposition! Traveling and camping are enjoyable pursuits, while golf remains a test of patience. He always enjoys time with his wife and family, which include 5 children (three still at home!), 4 cats, 3 grandchildren, 2 mothers and large family dinners.
